Jan's Blog

Jan Treat regularly writes of her experiences and thoughts in her walk with the Lord. This blog page is where her articles are published, with the most recent at the top, older ones below.

Photo of JanWhen I was a little girl, I believed in God and I knew and really believed that He sent His son, Jesus, to earth to live and die on the cross for my sins, as well as for the sins of the whole world.  I went to a church that talked a lot about doing good things for God and not much at all about knowing Him.  However, when I was 9 years old, I went to a youth meeting where the speaker made it very plain that everyone was a sinner and that the only way to get rid of the sin was to accept Jesus into his/her heart and He would come in and make you a child of God.  So, I raised my hand to accept Him.  Then, the speaker asked us to come forward if we raised our hand.  From then on, I was scared to pieces, but I made myself go forward.  Said a prayer and went back to my seat, not really changed on the inside.  I continued to be a "good girl" and not do anything that I thought was very bad, but I was self-centered, prideful, and conceited!  Thankfully, at the age of 16, I just got sick of myself, basically.  Ashamed of my self-righteousness and sin and I simply asked Jesus to cleanse me of all of it!  I told Him to come into my heart and make me brand new!  AND HE DID!  All I can say is that He did something on the inside of me that was so grand that I never felt the same way again!  He became my center, my reason for living, my desire!  The joy and peace that filled my heart that fall day in 1959, at the age of 16, has never left me and I can only thank and praise Him forever!

Really I don't remember ever doubting that there was a God or that the Bible was God's Word but I didn't know Him before that day!  And the more that I know Him the more that I love Him and the more that I love him the more I love others and want them to know Him!

Have you seen that picture of the little lamb that is lost and hurt and the lovely Shepherd is reaching down with His staff and pulling him up and out of this hurtful place!  I think, Gail, that that picture describes so beautifully what salvation really is for us!  It is all about His tremendous love for each one of us and about His grace that makes it possible to become His child forever!  The first verses from the Bible that I memorized were Galatians 2, verses 8 and 9.  They say:  "For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works so that no one can boast."  Oh, He made it so easy and so often, we make salvation so difficult!

God is so pure and righteous and beautiful!  He is love!  But He cannot look upon sin!  It is like there is this big chasm between man and God.  I can't draw it on this email, but if you can imagine a hill covered with people and another hill beside it but with a deep chasm between this glorious hill where God is sitting.   All these people you see on the hill are trying very hard to get to God.  They are going to church, doing good for the poor, even giving money for good things, but inside they are the same sinful people and no matter what they do, it isn't enough to change them inside, so they can get over this chasm to God.  God has a plan.  He loves the people too much to leave them over there on that hill of good works and striving, so He sends His beloved and only Son Jesus to die on the cross for all of the people's sins.  And the cross becomes the bridge!  That there is only way to God, the only way IS THROUGH THE CROSS!  Believing is not enough!  The Bible says that even the Devil and his demons believe.  One has to accept Jesus personally.  Take the step to cross that bridge to God is really just taking the free gift He gives us- When I talk to our students about salvation, I often show them a $5 bill and I ask if they believe that I will give it to them.  Someone will say, "Yes, I believe you will!"  I say, "Okay! You believe, but you don't have it!"  It is not until someone comes up and takes it out of my hand that they have it for their very own.

Jesus said in John 14, verse 6 that He is the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through Him! That not only sounds very narrow, it is very narrow!  He made it so clear that if we want to know God and be with God for eternity, we have to come to Him through belief and acceptance of the WAY which is Jesus Christ!

Words of Life

Without the Lord I would be
Lost through-out all of eternity.
Now I praise Him and bless His Name
He is the Holy One, always the same.

There is within my heart a song to sing
Unto Him I raise my voice in praise, thanking Him for everything.
Although I don't always understand
I choose to trust the One with the nail-scared Hand.

Someone said that without love the earth is a tomb.
I say without Jesus I’d shrivel and die without one bloom.
Because of Him I can dare to care.
I can make a difference everywhere.

Praying for others that they will be
Strengthened with might and given eyes to see.
To know the depths of His glorious love.
Until we reach our home in Heaven above.

Open Bible

Sunrise from ShilohFeeling a bit overwhelmed this morning with many life stresses, I decided to put on some Christian music to listen to while we worked.  Sheila Walsh’s lovely voice rang out, “You take my breath away!"

Looking out of the windows of Shiloh House, I watched with bated breath as the sun rose slowly, revealing dazzling streaks of light through a very thick fog that had blanketed our mountain!  The early morning sun’s luminous rays bathed our world up here in such magnificent beauty it is hard to describe in words!  Truly, it took my breath away in an exquisite showing of splendor!   As Sheila was singing I picked up a devotional booklet, opening it at random.  The devotion I turned to was called "Breathless" and started with these words:  "When was the last time something took your breath away because of its majesty?"

All coincidence?  I don’t think so!  In fact, I believe our very personal and loving Lord was saying to me in no uncertain terms, “If I can make a world that is filled with such wonder, beauty, and might, you can know that you can trust Me to meet your every daily needs, both now and always!  Absolutely nothing is too hard for Me!”

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be above all the earth. -Psalm 57:5Morning fog on the mountain

A Melody in My Heart

Singing a new song of praise to our God,
Loving Him more every day.
Nothing can destroy the faith that we have
In our Master and King as we humbly obey.
You, only You, are worthy of praise -
You created all things.
We join with all nature and the angels in heaven
Singing, "Holy is the Lamb who was slain!"
You spoke those words not long ago:
"The Master hath need of thee."
Again we went forth to follow Your call
Helping others to hear and to see.
The darkness flees when the Light comes in
As we all continue to sing.
The delight of those who receive your touch Keeps us coming and loving as new hope we bring

Are you a happy person? It has been said that happiness isn't on the road to anything... happiness is the road. Just the other day, a friend told me that every morning she awakens with a song. She finds herself singing all day long. If not out loud, in her heart she is singing. Now there is a heart that is joyful. No matter what one has to face each day, the choice is ours. Joy or discouragement and worry? If we want to have strength, we will choose joy for "The Joy of the Lord is our strength."

Living With Jesus

Oh, the beauty of Jesus.
Oh, the light He lives in.
Peace and joy are His calling card.
Ask Him to cleanse you from sin.

With Him you will be victorious.
You’ll dance and lift up your hands.
Your worship to Him will be glorious.
You won’t need a professional band.

So, sing and do not be silent.
Let your mouth bring forth pure sweet praise.
You’ll be glad that you know Him as Savior.
As your voice rings out songs of high praise,

He fills our mouths with pure laughter
And He gives us songs in the night,
Look closely, He is coming to take us.
To where there is perpetual light.

So, let’s be like the bee and keep working.
Pressing through the wax of problems and pain.
We will find our wings and our way home.
And there, with Him, forever we’ll reign.

We consider it a great privilege and responsibility to take the Light of the Gospel to wherever He leads as your hands of love extended to the nations. Nothing can we withhold from our King!

We are amazed at the way God is blessing our school after the disaster of June 13th. Our beautiful school was completely destroyed by a flash flood of epic proportions. A wall of mud and water totally submerged the school building leaving behind a ruined building, furniture and all our curriculum destroyed! But our student body and our great staff determined to build back what had been demolished by the mud, worked for days until the government said it was condemned and they had to leave. We are thrilled to tell you that we found a building that we can move into on time and it is affordable. At the bottom of this blog piece is a video you can click that will show photos of the tragedy. Before and after.

Nothing is too difficult or impossible for God when we just give it all up to Him.

Earl has said that the school is not the building but it is the people. While we know that this is true we have had to grieve the loss of our labor of love in the actual building a school that was very beautiful and efficient as well.

Your prayers and sacrificial gifts are appreciated so much! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We could never fully express our love and gratitude for you and for this church.

After the devastating flash flood of June 13, we feel in many ways that we are starting over. However, that is just another of Satan's lies. The truth is - many lives have found peace and love, salvation and hope.  No one or no thing can take away these treasures. Literally thousands of students have been taught the way of the Cross and they have been changed! All of the furniture and all of our curriculum was totally destroyed. We have sacrificially been given $25,000 to help replace the PACEs or workbooks. Yet even with that still more is needed to prepare each PACE and classrooms for the students. If you have ever given to our mission work or prayed for us and our work,THANK YOU! We'll be eternally grateful!

It is our prayer that God will continue to pour out His greatest blessings upon you and yours now and always.

With joy and hope we serve.

Sometimes life hurts, yet there is joy unspeakable full of glory in life. A life of joy is a life of peace. What are the enemies that would steal our joy and our peace? As I considered this question, I concluded that fear is our greatest enemy. Fear robs us of intimacy with God. "They hid themselves from His presence." These words in Genesis are some of the saddest in the Bible. Adam and Eve had a glorious relationship with God and they lost it when they chose their own way instead of God's way.

Doubt is another enemy that we must stand against. This life is a journey. If we follow the Shepherd closely there is indescribable love and sweet fellowship. I read somewhere that as we travel through the years of life, we must believe without proof in one certain thing... God is always with us. "The Lord your God is in your midst, the Mighty One will save. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:3) When we are lonely, troubled, sorrowing the loss of a loved one, or any loss, any adversity, we can call upon Him and our faithful God will encircle us with His comfort and love.

Treat family in Nagaland

While visiting David and family in Nagaland, India several years ago, we had a treasure hunt for Bo, Luka, Zakie, and their cousins.

We have a dozen grandchildren and I have taught hundreds of little ones. I'm pretty sure every child that I have been close to has gone on one of my treasure hunts. To find the treasure that I have hidden, they soon understand that they must carefully read the clues that tell them where they must go to find it. Sometimes the clues or directions are not so easy to follow and the children may need a bit of help and encouragement.

It could be said that all of mankind is engaged in a worldwide, colossal treasure hunt. Sadly, many seek treasure from earthly sources, such as wealth or public acclaim. But there are some who make Jesus the cornerstone of their lives. We need to stop and ask ourselves: what kind of treasure hunter am I? Let's not allow the search for worldly treasures to become our primary focus! Does your Heavenly Father have first place in your life? Let's put pleasing Him our highest goal of every day! He is the most glorious treasure that can be found. The Bible gives us many clues to help us find and keep this treasure that will not pass away.

Some glad morning when my life in heaven has just begun.
I'll join the heavenly chorus and sing like I've never ever sung.

I'll look into my Savior's face and see the love in His eyes.
Yes, I’ll rejoice in Him and know peaceful rest there in Paradise.

On earth He’s good and gives His children so much.
I pray I won’t fail Him for I live for His touch.

Jesus is my hope for today and tomorrow.
Even in death we shall have hope with the sorrow.

But today He is calling me to get ready to fight
For a battle between light and dark is just out of sight.

I hear the low rumble of war coming near.
He says He's prepared us and we are not to have fear.

Now,  He is speaking not only to you and to me.
But all of the people must be warned; may they clearly see.

"I'll make your hands to be strong and your feet to be sure.
You'll be able to fight through the night; you'll endure."

His Kingdom on earth is coming; indeed is already here.
He gives us sight to see heavenly things when they appear.

I’ll not fear the enemy, but instead I’ll rejoice.
I’m on the victory side for I made the right choice.

He says, "You won't fail Me, so just keep on giving and living,
Until you enter the place I'm preparing, it's called heaven."

Some folks can’t believe in what they don’t see.
But through faith comes salvation and the way to be free.

Paradise comes through believing in Jesus, God’s son.
It will be our new home when the victory here has been won.

As we keep His commands, we live deeply and surely in Him and He lives in us.  And this is how we experience His deep and abiding presence in us: by the Spirit He gave us.  (I John 3:24 MSG)

You are His beloved. A treasure of infinite worth. Life is a journey of discovering this glorious truth.
